Chinese Name Engraving on Spine
One of the services that makes our journal covers truly unique is the celebration of heritage and inclusivity. We are delighted to offer custom engraving of your full Chinese name right on the spine!
Below is a quick guide to how it works and what to expect.
🖋️ The Logistics
How many characters are allowed?
We can engrave up to three characters.Where will it be placed on the spine?
You get to decide! Once you add the engraving service to your cart, a pop-up window will prompt you to choose between the top or the bottom of the spine.
🤔 Cultural Etiquette & Intent
What if I don’t have a Chinese name but know what I want? Is it inappropriate to request this service?
I receive this question quite a bit, and the short answer is: not at all! I don't find it offensive in the slightest. In fact, I find it quite endearing—so much so that I often share these chosen names with my mama or my bestie so we can admire them together. In Chinese language classrooms, teachers regularly use transliteration and translation to create beautiful aliases for students who only have English names, so the practice itself is very common. Cultural appropriation would be if you were to sell this specific service yourself without being of this ethnicity and profit from it. In this scenario, I am your artist, and you are simply enjoying the craft! If anyone ever questions your cover, you can kindly direct them to this Q&A or invite them to email me at contact@juelzandgems.com so I can gently set them straight. What are the limitations for the engraving?
We naturally cannot engrave vulgar or explicit characters. However, I know your mama raised you better than that, so we will skip the lecture and leave it at that!
